The IVO investigation, released earlier this week, pointed to serious deficiencies in the care of patients with coronary heart disease in 98 nursing homes across the country.
20 percent of patients did not receive an individual doctor’s evaluation, only 5-7 percent had to see a doctor physically, and almost none of the regions followed regulations regarding end-of-life care .
In SVT’s “Agenda”, Lena Hallengren (S) commented on the criticisms, but said they should also be “nuanced”.
– There are shortcomings, but there are 1700 homes and in 98 of them it has been thought that it should be continued, but in many homes for the elderly there is a structure where it works. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do a lot more, he said.
“Of course you can’t do it over the phone”
He was asked if the errors were due to the system in general and he replied that it is not his image, in which case the criticism would have been directed at all companies in Sweden.
She notes that not all 1,700 houses have been criticized, but neither have all 1,700 houses been examined. IVO has been based on housing where there have been “indications” of deficiencies.
Lena Hallengren, however, claimed that “something is wrong”.
– Something is wrong, I cannot say anything else, but the legislation is clear that the necessary care must be taken and that everyone has the right to an individual assessment. It is clear that you cannot do it over the phone or not speak to the individual or to the relatives.
Hallengren: watch the medical competition
The Minister of Social Affairs, Lena Hallengren, pointed out that it is the responsibility of the regions to make changes based on the IVO review, before January 15.
Host Anders Holmberg asked what responsibility she and the government have.
– Provide resources. We need to look at the medical competence and clarify it. We must have access to more medical personnel in the care of the elderly, ensure that those who work there have competence as auxiliary nurses. And good conditions, so they can really do a good job every day that you go to work.
IVO presented serious deficiencies in all regions for the care of the elderly in nursing homes during the pandemic.
