Lars-Åke Lagrell.
Lars-Åke Lagrell is dead.
He turned 80 years old.
– I appreciated it very much both as a person and as president. It has meant a lot to Swedish football, Lars Lagerbäck tells Sportbladet.
Swedish football is in mourning.
Lars-Åke Lagrell, former president of the Swedish Football Association, has passed away after a period of illness.
In 1991, Lagrell replaced Lennart Johansson as president of the Swedish Football Association. And in total it was 21 years in the presidency of Lars-Åke Lagrell, where the bronze of the 1994 World Cup became his great highlight.
“It means a lot”
One of those in mourning is former national team captain Lars Lagerbäck.
– Of course very, very sad, he tells Sportbladet.
What has Lagrell meant for Swedish football?
– It’s probably difficult to describe in words. I really appreciated him both as a person and as a president. It has meant a lot to Swedish football.
Are there any special memories that stand out from the years you worked together?
– It’s difficult to find something specific, but he was always there and I think it’s a good quality, says Lagerbäck.
“Thanks for everything”
Current SvFF President Karl-Erik Nilsson says in a statement that:
– Lars-Åke Lagrell’s efforts for Swedish football are invaluable, and he was and continues to be a great source of inspiration for me and many others. Our thoughts go out to his wife Yvonne, his children and grandchildren, and all his friends when they are away. Thanks for everything, Lars-Åke, rest in peace.
Lars-Christer Olsson, president of Swedish elite football, completes:
– He is one of our top leaders in absolute football who has passed away. Lars-Åke was extremely energetic. There was a former architect who drew the lines for how to organize Swedish football, the former president of the national team Tore Brodd, and who then carried out everything in practice was Lars-Åke Lagrell, says Olsson.
