In the past 24 hours, Germany has reported 4,000 new cases of Covid-19, which is the highest figure in several months, according to the German infection control authority Robert-Koch-Institut (RKI).

“Worrying,” says the Minister of Health.

When the situation was worst in the spring, just over 6,000 people fell ill in Germany every day. The latest daily RKI figure, 4,058 new cases, is at a level not seen since April.

– The figures show a worrying increase. To date, hardly any other country in Europe has handled the crisis as well (as Germany). But we must not accidentally delete what we have achieved, says Health and Medical Care Minister Jens Spahn at a press conference.

In light of the fact that the surge is taking place almost throughout the country, RKI chief Lothar Wieler warns that the situation could soon derail.

– We may see more than 10,000 new cases a day, and the virus begins to spread uncontrollably, he says.

Accommodation prohibited

On Wednesday, most German states agreed to a so-called “Beherbergungsverbot”, an accommodation ban, which prohibits hotel owners from receiving visitors from risky areas, even within Germany, unless they can show proof of covid- 19 negative of the last 48 hours.

In principle, this applies to travelers from areas with more than 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. However, Berlin is out of the deal, among other things.

VAT plastic shortage?

From a medical point of view, fears are now being raised about a local shortage of intensive care units, despite Germany’s very high capacity in international comparison in terms of VAT locations and general care locations. Especially in big cities, and especially in Berlin, such trends are already visible, according to Christian Karagiannidis, incoming president of the German Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Doctors (DGIIN).

– I am sure that the intensive care capacity will be sufficient for the next few weeks, but regionally it can be full in individual clinics, and then they can be transferred to clinics elsewhere, he says, and warns that the transport of patients can also “distances longer “domestically become relevant, he tells the Rheinische Post.
