Birch trout are bubbling and waiting for spring. The bird is one of the new species that falls into the “near threatened” category on the red list.

The number of red-listed species in Sweden increases by 11 percent in the latest updated red list for Swedish animals, fungi, algae and plants, reports SR Ekot. The list is compiled by the Art Data Bank of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) every five years.

– The biggest threats are how we use our nature. It is land use, such as forestry, changed agriculture, says Lena Tranvik, acting manager of Artdatabanken at SLU, on the radio.

On the Red List, the situation is assessed for almost 22,000 Swedish species, and more than one in five of these species are now on the red list. 2,249 of them are considered threatened.

As various media have previously reported, the number of birds on the Red List has increased significantly, by 21 percent. Species such as greyhound, seagull, birch, and red winged fall into the “near threatened” category.

In addition to land use, it also affects climate change, but also tree diseases, which can affect tree-dependent species, Ekot writes.
