The number of police reports about the use of children for sexual poses increased by more than 60 percent last year compared to the previous year. This is demonstrated by the statistics of the Crime Prevention Council, BRÅ.

Sex pose is a title that is common in online child sex crime investigations.

– We see a marked increase in this type of crime on my camera. We have just received them, there are several preliminary investigations underway and I have a colleague who has an equally large case in court that is ongoing at the moment, says Eva Johnsson, deputy attorney general of the Public Ministry of Uddevalla.

In a goal that draws attention where Eva Johnsson was a prosecutor, last week a man was convicted in western Sweden of several different abuses against several children. Among other things, 20 cases of exploitation of children for sexual poses, of which 17 were considered serious.

It is common for children to be threatened and coerced into doing what the perpetrators want, says Chief Prosecutor Eva Johnsson.

– It can be anything from sending a photo of your bare breasts to penetrating you with objects, he says.

According to experts, these are abuses as traumatic as rape. At the same time that more and more alleged crimes related to sexual poses were reported to the police, the number of cases, that is, investigations, led by prosecutors, also increased dramatically, by 72 percent since 2018.

In 475 such cases last year, 1,500 alleged crimes were investigated.

In an investigation there may be several alleged perpetrators and large numbers of children who have been abused over and over again.

– This is a serious crime, so it is clear that we take it very seriously, says Attorney General Petra Lundh.

The reasons why reports and investigations into the filing of crimes against children are increasing may be several, according to prosecutors and police officers Ekot spoke to.

– Or it may be the case that more cases are reported, or it may be the case that more crimes are actually committed, but of course it may also be the case that the police discover more cases, as a result of having made investments in this area, says Petra Lundh.

Could it have something to do with the pandemic?

– I can’t comment on that. BRÅ can take care of that in further research and just dig into this, says Petra Lundh.
