Large increase in covid disease in Västra Götaland hospitals

The increase is seen in all hospitals in the region, but it is greater at Sahlgrenska Hospital, where 27 new patients have been admitted since last Friday. 197 covids are now being cared for there, which means the hospital is back above the peak of spring during the first wave.

The increase was also at Skaraborg Hospital: from 24 hospitalized patients on Friday to 44 today Monday.

According to Jan Kilhamn, the development in hospitals follows with some delay the spread of the infection in the region. During the first three weeks of March, the number of confirmed cases increased by 20 percent.

– And now we see an increase in hospitalized patients. This is the same development we’ve seen before with confirmed cases, hospitalization, and then sadly intensive care and deaths. That is why we are concerned.

A similar development was seen in Stockholm last week, when the number of hospitalized patients had risen so much that the region decided to postpone all planned care. There was also a sharp increase in patients requiring intensive care.

– It’s the same kind of decision that we made last fall and that we make now that we are in the third wave, Johan Bratt, acting director of health and medical care, tells DN then.

According to Jan Kilhamn, the Västra Götaland region is not there yet. The reason is that an increase in patients in the IVA wards has not yet been observed. Currently, 53 patients are being treated in intensive care in the region, as many as on Friday.

– Our staff does a fantastic job. You adjust, you relieve yourself, and you help each other. We transport patients between hospitals. We try to distribute as evenly as possible. But in the end, if the need for intensive care increases even more, it will affect other care.

Why the big increase? It is currently unclear, according to Kilhamn. The so-called British mutation dominates samples that are analyzed in depth using so-called sequencing, which may be part of the explanation.

But he believes that difficulties in following the recommendations also come into play.

– Also last year, we had a spike in the spread of infection sometime in mid-April and therefore we want our residents to respect these effects. We want to reduce this now so that we don’t get a third peak. It is our own decisions in everyday life that can play an important role. .
