Liberals have long been concerned about which way the party should choose on the question of government. The current cooperation with the ruling parties and the Center Party is rejected by the party’s top leadership, while other parts of the party prioritize excluding Sweden’s Democrats from influence.
L has promised to give information on the government issue long before the next parliamentary elections that will take place in the fall of 2022. On Friday, L’s party board decided that the January collaboration with S, MP and C will end in agreement. with the fall budget.
– We see in front of us that we will agree on a budget this autumn and after that we should end the cooperation in an orderly manner. Our message is that we are going to the polls as an independent force and that we want to work for a bourgeois government, says party leader Nyamko Sabuni.
But the decision runs the risk that lead to a continuing split within L. The party board proposal won with 13 votes in favor, 8 against and 2 reservations.
– It is clear that it is regrettable. This is a difficult question for everyone. We agree on the political orientation and that it is best carried out within a bourgeois government. So we disagree on how we can do it, says Nyamko Sabuni.
She believes that the parliamentary situation means that it is not possible to isolate individual parties in the Riksdag. The Sweden Democrats and the Left Party constitute a parliamentary reality that cannot be ignored.
– I make the analysis that no government will be created unless it has to be related to some external party. All parties must take this into account. From now on, we will talk to all parties in the Riksdag and look for majorities where we can find them, he says.
Can you imagine a budget collaboration with the Swedish Democrats?
– A bourgeois government will not have its own majority and, like the current government, will have to relate to the Riksdag Finance Committee. It has to be managed.
Doesn’t this mean that a bourgeois government should receive budget support from the Swedish Democrats?
– No, it just means that SD should not find companionship with the green-reds. It is up to the Sweden Democrats which budget they vote on if they don’t vote for theirs. I think Jimmie Åkesson would rather see a bourgeois government than a social democratic government. Therefore, you must ensure that such a government can be established.
So a budget collaboration with SD is not relevant in your opinion?
– No, I do not see in front of me that we have budgetary cooperation like the one we have today with the Social Democrats.
According to Nyamko Sabuni, the cooperation of the bourgeois government depends on the parties being able to agree on a set of liberal values.
– If you want to restrict democracy and the rule of law or build politics on an inhumane view of the people, it will not happen with our votes, says Sabuni.
The Liberals are now convening a party council on March 28 to make a decision on the choice of road.
SD Leader Jimmie Åkesson he is not surprised by the message.
– It is positive that another party has joined the growing crowd that understands the parliamentary situation and realizes that it should be able to speak to all parties in the Swedish Riksdag, writes on Twitter and continues:
– At the same time, Sabuni is dangerous when he launches an ultimatum for the formation of a government that will take place in a year and a half. It’s not very professional and it can very well be punished to have such a high tail, especially if you get around three percent of the vote.
Another bourgeois partyr are cautiously positive to L.
– Sweden needs a new beginning and a bourgeois government, and I welcome everyone who wants to work for it. At the same time, all parties must make their own decisions, and I respect the fact that this is the liberals’ process, says M leader Ulf Kristersson.
– It is good that the liberals are announcing that they want to change government and support a candidate for bourgeois prime minister. Today’s announcement opens up more political deals with L in the future. Now it remains to be seen what his party’s council says, says KD leader Ebba Busch.
Prime Minister Stefan Löfven It is positive that the Liberals want to continue cooperation on the January deal until the 2022 budget bill and then liquidate it at an orderly pace.
– It is not strange, each party makes its evaluations based on what it thinks is better, it says in a written comment.
