For most of Saturday, thousands of people demonstrated across the United States. In most places, the demonstrations are said to have proceeded smoothly, but as night fell, several riots broke out in the capital, US media report.
According to the Washington Post, early in the evening, police have managed to keep Trump supporters and their opponents separate, but both sides have become increasingly aggressive.
The city’s police chief, Peter Newsham, told the newspaper that every time the police took control of a situation, there was an alarm for riots elsewhere.
– We do the best we can, he says.
At midnight local time, four people had been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed.
According to The New York Times, the police are said to have arrested about 20 people.
The demonstrations come the day after the Supreme Court’s decision not to accept the state of Texas’s attempt to override millions of votes in court and, in effect, destroy the election result.
Minor fights were also reported from other locations. One person was injured in a shooting at Olympia on the outskirts of Seattle, according to The Seattle Times. There is no information on the shooting injury situation and two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
President Trump himself drew attention to the demonstrations Twitter and called the protesters patriots. In the afternoon, he flew by helicopter with thousands of cheering fans in Washington, reports the Washington Post.
