King’s brother interrogated in Jordan

The information from Jordan late Saturday night was troubling and contradictory.

The security forces have detained about 20 executives, while the king’s half brother, Hamza, has been visited and interrogated, according to official information.

Arrested refuses

Prince Hamza has been asked to stop attacking Jordan’s security and stability, the state-run Petra news agency reports. Military Chief Yusaf Hunaiti denies reports that the former crown prince has been arrested.

– What has been published about the arrest of Prince Hamza is not true. But Hamza has been asked to halt activities that could “shake the stability and security of the country,” Hunaiti said, according to AFP.

But former Crown Prince Hamza in a video accuses the country’s leader of corruption, incompetence and harassment. Hamza also claims that he is under house arrest. The video reached the BBC media company through Hamza’s lawyer.

– We have reached a point where no one can say or comment on anything without being pushed, arrested, harassed or threatened, he says, among other things.

Title deprived

In 2004, King Abdullah deprived his half brother Hamza of the title of crown prince in a move believed to have been aimed at strengthening the regent’s power.

Former Crown Prince Hamza is the son of Queen Noor, while King Abdullah, a few years older, is the son of Princess Muna al-Hussein in her marriage to King Hussein.

Countries in the region, as well as the United States, reacted very quickly to the message from the Jordanian security forces. The US State Department said King Abdullah “has our full support,” as do Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, Reuters reports.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also says it is behind Jordan’s actions to maintain stability.
