In Sweden, as well as countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, immigrant groups in overcrowded suburbs have been heavily affected by COVID-19.
Therefore, translated information about the coronavirus has been shown to be vital in slowing the spread of the deadly virus.
But KD’s two EU MPs, David Lega and Sara Skyttedal, voted last week against immigrant groups receiving information about COVID-19 translated into their own languages.
Skyttedal followed the recommendation of the Conservative party group, EPP, which is sent about an hour before the vote, without properly checking what they would vote on.
– We know the recommendations closely. I’m glad it doesn’t go wrong more often. I’m also pregnant with my poor pregnant brain, explains Skyttedal.
But even David Lega, who is not pregnant, voted in line with what the Conservative Party group wanted. Expressen looked him up, but did not reach out for comment.
However, the moderates, who are part of the same party group, voted in the opposite direction and are in favor of immigrant groups receiving translated information.
Skyttedal: “I don’t want to translate into Maltese”
Expressen has read the recommendation of the conservative party group in the European Parliament, the EPP. It is clear that members are recommended to vote no on item 2 (language for other groups) and 3 (to include people of immigrant origin), followed by Skyttedal and Lega.
Sara Skyttedal says it’s all a misunderstanding.
– We have misunderstood how these sub-claims were connected. We wanted to mark against the use of all official languages, which we think is unreasonable. Sweden cannot translate everything into Maltese. We have now adjusted our votes to reflect our intention, says Sara Skyttedal.
You follow the recommendation of your party group, is this really a mistake?
– I can’t be more than honest then. It happens that parliamentarians press the wrong button or misinterpret the duration of the demand.
Parliament voted in favor of the translated information
Although the Conservative Party group recommended voting no on information for immigrants, the European Parliament voted yes on the entire section, which reads in its entirety:
1: Stresses the importance of clear, accessible and understandable information on infections, health systems, existing measures and travel restrictions at European, national, regional and local level; Stresses that this important information must be available in all official languages;
2: and in the languages used by important sectors of the population,
3: to include people of immigrant origin.
All other Swedish parties in the European Parliament voted in favor of people with an immigrant background being able to translate information about the coronavirus.
The day after the interview with Skyttedal, Dag Elfström returns from his office in Brussels. He writes in a text message that he has little time to prepare for a vote.
“We read the paragraph and the voting list too quickly, we just … We trusted the PPE in a case where we should have had our own KD line, just”, he writes.
Expressen is reviewing
Expressen has examined in several articles how Swedish authorities have violated information in other languages about the coronavirus. Just two weeks after the medical warnings, the city of Stockholm translated the information about the crown.
