The maintenance support has been partly turned into a kind of municipal unemployment fund, according to the Christian Democrats. Stock Photography.

The Christian Democrats want to reform the Swedish benefit system, especially income support. Instead of municipalities, the state should take responsibility for costs through an individual daily allowance, MPs Jakob Forssmed and Sofia Damm write on the Svenska Dagbladet debate page.

The maintenance support, previously called social benefits and which will function as a definitive safety net, has partly become a kind of municipal unemployment fund, the debaters believe.

According to KD, maintenance support should not go to healthy people, but then the state should intervene. The daily allowance must be linked to the person and not to the home, as well as to the need for education and the measures of the person to be “compatible” in the labor market. “The social community is threatened if we are not allowed to employ people who depend on benefits,” write KD politicians.
