Karolinska: It has been preparing us for a second wave since last summer

Last week, 2,966 new cases of covid-19 were found in the Stockholm region, the figure for the previous week was 1,657.

Now there is also a clear increase in covid patients in healthcare. Until now, the increase in infection has been managed within the framework of routine healthcare activities in hospitals in the region. But the increase worries chief physician Elda Sparrelid.

– It is a serious situation, we do not know where this is going, he has previously told DN.

At the same time comes fresh reports that Karolinska University Hospital, St. Göran Hospital, Södersjukhuset and Södertälje Hospital now have lower sick leave compared to the same period last year. Both short-term and long-term sick leave are increasing.

Several hospitals note that the number of people on sick leave on staff is increasing now compared to the same period last year.

In both Karolinska in Solna and Huddinge, the number of hospitalized corona-infected patients has increased, especially in infection care. Figures from Wednesday show that four patients are being cared for in the intensive care unit in Solna, two in ECMO and two in the IVA ward in Huddinge.

Although no one knows yet how much greater the increase in patients may be, care is being prepared.

– We have been preparing for a second wave since last summer, says Catarina Thepper in the Karolinska press service.

Do you have full staff or many people on sick leave?

– From what I understand, we have full staff in the care of covid, but some are on sick leave. Infection and intensive care wards warn that more people are on sick leave, as are all employers: there are more at home for colds or caring for sick children.

“In recent days, we have seen an increasing number of patients treated with suspected disease,” says Yvonne Hejdenberg from the Södertälje Hospital press service.

In Södersjukhuset, see more positive aspects of those who are tested for covid-19. “There is also a tendency for a little more people with suspected covid-19 to apply to our emergency department,” the press service responds.

Intensive care was provided on Thursday two people and 12 people were treated in hospital care for covid-19. There are also more staff on sick leave compared to fall 2019. “This is probably due to covid-19 and the stricter restrictions on not coming to work if you are not completely healthy.”

Also at Södertälje Hospital, the number of covid patients who need to be cared for in the hospital have increased over the last week.

– In recent days, we have also seen an increasing number of patients treated with suspicion of the disease, says Yvonne Hejdenberg in the press service.

Right now there is no one Infectious covid-19 patient admitted to the intensive care unit of Södertälje hospital, but more and more applicants are seen with symptoms that imply a risk of covid-19.

Yvonne Hejdenberg says the latest health statistics for staff, which are taken once a month, showed that illness rates have fallen to more normal levels, but that the uncertainty at the moment is great.

– The experience of the daytime situation is that it increases slightly again.

Also at Danderyd Hospital there is an increase in sickness rates among staff.

– We are starting to see an increase in sick leave, more than normal this year. Sick leave is largely covered by hourly employees, overtime, and contract staff, says press manager Bernd Schmitz.

At the same time, more and more covid-19 patients are being admitted to Danderyd as well. Two patients were treated with IVA on Thursday and currently 16 patients are admitted to hospital care with a positive test. 15 patients are hospitalized with a high suspicion that they have a crown.

– We see that the number of patients who need to be cared for as inpatients with us increases every day, says Bernd Schmitz.

Norrtälje Hospital operated from Vårdbolaget Tiohundra has more suspects and was found infected in its covid stream, compared to early fall.

– However, we are not near the highest levels this spring, says communications manager Per Grundberg.

In recent weeks, Norrtälje Hospital has had many employees at home with cold symptoms and established covid-19.

– Now some of those who have been at home are beginning to return to work, but the staff situation remains tense.

Norrtälje Hospital is planning and preparing, as are other hospitals and the region as a whole, for several possible scenarios, all of which include an expected rise in covid-19 during the fall.

– At the same time, our ambition is to carry out regular operations with planned operations and reception operations as far as possible, says Per Grundberg.
