– A region reports serious impacts in several areas. Twelve regions report a significant impact. But no one is reporting a critical impact in the areas we track, Iréne Nilsson-Carlsson, a public health adviser for the National Board of Health and Wellness, said at the joint press conference Thursday.

The number of IVA cases and the number of deaths continues to rise, while there are a large number of people carrying the infection in the country. Last week, 261,229 people were sampled, of which 14 percent tested positive. However, there are big differences in different age groups and in different parts of the country.

So far, 58 new deaths have been reported in Sweden on Thursday, December 10. A total of 7,354 people have now died after becoming infected with COVID-19 in Sweden, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency.

– It is a very serious situation, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of department of the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Currently 260 people are receiving intensive care due to covid-19. It is 49 percent of the total number of patients currently receiving intensive care. There is a 22 percent capacity available in intensive care, but the National Board of Health and Welfare also assesses that there is “room” to increase capacity.

The Stockholm Region has requested assistance with the IVA staff in the form of an application to the National Board of Health and Welfare. When asked what is happening with the region’s petition, Iréne Nilsson-Carlsson replied:

– We have established routines with contacts with the regions. We handle it in the established processes. In detail, I cannot go on more than this.

The Medical Products Agency was also present at Thursday’s press conference. Veronica Arthurson, unit chief for the Medical Products Agency, said the authority will have a good idea of how vaccines work. Currently, the European Medicines Agency, EMA, is examining four vaccine candidates.

– In the event of approval of covid-19 vaccines, we will have a good idea of how effectively they protect against covid-19 for adults and the elderly. We will also be aware of common and less common side effects that occur relatively quickly.

The Medical Products Agency is also responsible for tracking vaccines once they have been approved and started to be used.

“The purpose is, among other things, to detect unusual side effects early on and also to monitor the protective effect and immunity over time,” said Veronica Arthurson.
