The Left Party will elect a new party leader on Saturday. Shortly after 1 p.m., Jonas Sjöstedt took the podium and made his last speech at a party congress.

– We are facing the biggest fight of all, that of job security for all employees in Sweden. I’m talking about the last topic, said Sjöstedt.

Thursday’s message, that the government does not want to go ahead with the investigated bills but to use the agreement between PTK and the Confederation of Swedish Companies, Jonas Sjöstedt described as a partial victory for the party.

– But LO has said no to that solution. We cannot accept that the government and aid parties run over Swedish auxiliary nurses and construction workers. Stefan Löfven must back down. Don’t drive LO with the legislation, Jonas Sjöstedt said from the rostrum.

After the speech, Jonas Sjöstedt said at a press conference that the change of party leader will not mean any change of course on the last issue.

– We have been very united in the party board and we feel good pressure on this issue from the whole party. We stand by what we’ve said all along, that you have to negotiate with LO. Our conditionality of the government’s existence remains, says Jonas Sjöstedt, referring to the fact that the Left Party mandate decided that Stefan Löfven could remain as prime minister after the last elections.

– Now the government and the coalition parties must make changes that allow LO to say that we can accept this.

He also emphasized the severity of the pandemic in his speech. How responsible is it to threaten a government crisis in such a situation?

– If nothing happens, then there will be no government crisis, but if the government breaches employee security in the middle of a pandemic, then there will be a government crisis. That responsibility falls on them.

Jonas Sjöstedt makes his last day at the Riksdag on Monday and takes the flight to Hanoi in Vietnam on Tuesday, where his family now lives. His wife Ann Måwe is the Swedish ambassador there. Jonas Sjöstedt has had a high profile on the climate issue when it comes to aviation, but is forced to state that he sees no other alternatives for his trip.

Once there, he sees in front of him that he must dedicate himself to writing books and articles. For that, you have registered your own company. But in his speech, he also promised to run as a poll worker in the party’s campaign before the 2022 elections.

In the Riksdag, Jonas Sjöstedt will be replaced by Gudrun Norberg, a municipal politician from Umeå.

In his speech, Jonas Sjöstedt described how his involvement on the left, both in the VPK with K and in the communists, began in 1980, in connection with the referendum on nuclear energy, when the party called itself communist.

When you joined, the party still had close ties to brutal socialist dictatorships. Now V gets a party leader from a younger generation who was not present at the time. What does that mean?

– I have been the last person on our party’s board of directors who was a member before the fall of the Berlin Wall. at the same time, I have seen it as my political task to bring the Left Party safely to port as the modern, green socialist left party as we are today. I think that has been one of the tasks of my political life. Now comes a generation that has not been involved at all at that time and I think it is basically good for our party, says Jonas Sjöstedt.

It’s a very different digital V-congress, where the outgoing and incoming party leader is in a hotel in Stockholm, while most of the delegates are spread across the country in groups of up to 50 people.

Some surprises It’s hard to wait, as the nominating committee’s proposal for a new V leader, Nooshi Dadgostar, is unrivaled. Other potential candidates, such as economic-political spokesperson Ulla Andersson, said no early in the process.

Nooshi Dadgostar will give his front-line speech as the new party chairman only on Sunday afternoon as the end of the entire congress. On Sunday, the congress will also draw up a new strategic program that, among other things, formulates the goal that V should strengthen his electoral support among workers and residents of rural areas.
