Martin Johnsrud Sundby’s career may be over.
The Norwegian is now self-critical.
– It would probably have been better with 800 hours of training on the body than with 1,000-1,100 hours, says in a new documentary series according to Dagbladet.
In November, 36-year-old Martin Johnsrud Sundby broke the 15-kilometer race in Beitostölen with severe back pain.
– It’s like knives in the back, he later told Norwegian VG.
Back problems may be the end of the Norwegian world champion’s career. In a new documentary series airing on NRK on Saturday, he says that training generally feels good. But that is blocked in competitive situations.
– I’m confused. It is the first time in my life that I have physical problems that I cannot close my eyes to. I am completely paralyzed, he says in the documentary according to the Norwegian Dagbladet.
The self-deprecating world champion
Before the 2011 Holmenkollen World Cup, Johnsrud Sundby changed his training plan and started training harder than any other Norwegian skier. The 1,100 hours per year training dose was a great success, but it was also costly.
In the documentary, he is now self-critical of the change. He believes that there is always a risk in training as hard as he has.
– The race (the 15-kilometer race in Beitostölen) would probably have been better with 800 hours of body training than 1,000-1,100 hours, says the 36-year-old.
Despite his back problems, Martin Johnsrud Sundby will compete in the Norwegian Cup in Lygna on Sunday. The distance will be 30 kilometers in the classic style.
