Johnny Depp loses his trial against The Sun.

The Hollywood star sued the newspaper after being called a “wife abuser,” but his ex-wife Amber Heard testified against him during the trial.

– Victims of violence in close relationships should never be silenced and we thank the judge for this result and Amber Heard for her courage to testify in court, a spokesperson for The Sun tells her own newspaper.

The trial lasted three weeks over the summer and only after three months of deliberations and reviews of the evidence was the judge able to announce his decision on Monday. According to the court, The Sun had sufficient evidence to be able to call Johnny depp, 57, for “wife abuser” after it was established that the Hollywood star on at least one occasion used violence against her, claims Sky News.

Johnny Depp decided to sue the newspaper after The Sun published a column from the newspaper’s executive editor. Dan Wootton with the title: “How JK Rowling really happy that wife abuser Johnny Depp gets a role in the new ‘Fantastic Monster’ movies?

Under British law, Johnny Depp needed to prove that his reputation was “seriously damaged” through the publication of the article, while The Sun needed to prove the truth, or the probability that what they reported was true, reports Sky News.

“Complete defense”

The judge writes in his decision, according to The Guardian:

The plaintiff (Depp, editor’s note) has been unsuccessful in his defamation charges. Respondents (The Sun, editor’s note) have shown that what they published, in the sense that I have taken the words, was true. “

“I have come to this conclusion after examining in detail the 14 occasions on which the defendants rely, as well as the general objections raised by the plaintiff. In these circumstances, Parliament has said that the defendants must have a full defense ”.

Johnny Depp’s ex-wife Amber heardThe 34-year-old stood up and testified during the trial in favor of The Sun. She claimed during the trial that Depp had repeatedly threatened to kill her:

“Some incidents were so serious that I was afraid he would kill me, either consciously or simply because he lost control and went too far,” he said from the witness stand.

A recording was also heard during the trial in which Depp admitted that he once rendered Amber Heard bald. On cross-examination, he claimed that he did so “by mistake.”

Questioned for 20 hours

Depp was interrogated for a total of 20 hours during the five days of the trial and repeatedly denied that he had been violent towards Heard during the couple’s relationship.

A spokesperson for The Sun told his own newspaper:

– The Sun has advocated and campaigned for victims of violence in close relationships for more than 20 years. Victims of violence in close relationships should never be silenced and we thank the judge for this result and Amber Heard for her courage to testify in court.
