The trial between actor Johnny Depp, his ex-wife Amber Heard, and The Sun newspaper caught the world’s attention when it took place in London in July 2020.
It was an article in The Sun of 2018, where Johnny Depp is accused of abusing his ex-wife while they were together, something that he himself denied.
The article led the actor to sue The Sun’s editor-in-chief Dan Wootton and the newspaper’s owner, News Group Newspapers (NGN).
The sun is right
On Monday morning, the verdict fell in favor of The Sun. The court finds that the allegations against Johnny Depp are well founded.
Dan Wootton and The Sun have argued that the article does not constitute defamation because they believe it is based on truthful information, such as testimonials, photographs, medical evidence, text messages from Depp himself, and audio recordings.
The case has been called “the largest English defamation dispute of the 2000s”. The legal process can continue if the verdict is appealed.
