The judges change.
After a long crisis meeting, Joel Lundqvist is reported to the disciplinary committee for his pressure against one of the linesmen.
– We made the wrong decision on ice. We don’t perceive the situation in the same way when we go through it later, says head judge Mikael Sjöqvist.
During yesterday’s meeting between HV71 and Frölunda, Frölunda captain Joel Lundqvist ended in a dispute with HV defender Emil Johansson. In connection with this, he gave linesman Ricard Nilsson a push on the back with one hand.
The situation received a lot of attention on social media and many wanted to see a report to the disciplinary committee.
But neither the judges on the ice nor the situation room decided to denounce Lundqvist.
A decision that also attracted attention in the Judiciary.
Since lunchtime today, the judges have sat in a multi-hour meeting to discuss the situation, and the outcome of that meeting will be that Joel Lundqvist is reported to the disciplinary committee after all.
– On ice, I do not perceive the situation as after. It’s clear that Joel comes in later and that he can definitely cancel much earlier. You don’t need to put that force on the linesman, says Mikael Sjöqvist.
He was one of the two main judges on the ice. Sjöqvist was present at today’s meeting and has been involved to the highest degree in a report.
– Joel’s behavior is undesirable. The responsibility lies entirely with him, not with Emil (Johansson) or the linesman. It’s behavior the SHL doesn’t want to be associated with, says Sjöqvist, who is also self-critical.
In this case, it was very clear
– It is completely my responsibility, I made an incorrect evaluation. We made mistakes on ice and now we take our responsibility from the judiciary.
Why not make the decision to report now when you see the situation later?
– We contact both the referee and the responsible line referee and say that (the situation) we want to discuss it. We are close to a change of decision even then, but there are more people who want to contact in such a situation.
– It is important that it is the correct decision, it is not only I who should think, there are four of us in the refereeing team and then we want to discuss with more people if they also believe that we are right in our opinion. In this case, it’s pretty clear that we’ve made a mistake on the ice. That opinion is in line with what the SHL stands for. What we do is learn from the situation.
Therefore, Lundqvist runs the risk of being sanctioned with a suspension. A hard blow for Frölunda, who meets Malmö tomorrow Saturday.
