The next US president, Democrat Joe Biden, arrives in Washington and attended a ceremony Tuesday night on the National Mall, at the White House and Congress, to honor the more than 400,000 Americans who have died in the pandemic.
– To heal, we must remember. It can be hard to remember at times, but this is how we heal. It is important to do that as a nation, Biden said.
Along the Reflecting Pool of the Great Lincoln Memorial, 400 lanterns had been placed to symbolize the people who lost their lives in the pandemic.
Before Biden delivered his speech, future Vice President Kamala Harris spoke. Even her with the message that the country must unite.
– For many months we have taken care of ourselves. Tonight we cry and begin to heal together.
Earlier in the day, Biden gave an emotional farewell speech in his home state of Delaware, before he and his wife Jill took the flight, rather than the train, as originally planned, to the capital. The farewell ceremony was held in the town of New Castle on the premises of the National Guard, named after Biden’s late son Beau.
– I am proud, very proud to be a child of Delaware. But even prouder to be here and to do this from Major Beau Biden’s facility.
– I only regret one thing: that he is not here. We should introduce him as the new president, Biden said with tears streaming down his cheeks.
