As a close advisor, incumbent President Biden elected Cedric Richmond, a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, a position he is now leaving. Richmond has been central to Biden’s base among African American voters, and has been part of Biden’s circle for some time. Now he will direct the external work of the White House, among other things, towards the grassroots and interest organizations.
Steve Ricchetti, who was leading the campaign, gets an advisory role, as does Democratic strategist Mike Donilon. Ricchetti has a background as a lobbyist and was Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff.
The names were announced Tuesday and play a role in creating a diversified roster, although all have long experience in political work.
It is also clear that Joe Bidens Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, campaign manager, becomes deputy chief of staff. She was the one who led the campaign through the pandemic, a rare time for political activity.
O’Malley Dillon will work for Ron Klain, who has previously been confirmed as Chief of Staff. She and Klain worked closely together during the Obama administration, when Klain also coordinated the White House’s handling of the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
Incoming First Lady Jill Biden has also started recruiting key people and has appointed Julissa Reynosa Pantaleon as chief of staff.
Joe Biden is expected to wait up to a few weeks to make a final decision on his cabinet, as these appointments, unlike White House positions, must be approved by the Senate. It is not known which party will win the most until January.
Of course, the speculation continues. One person who absolutely can’t get a job is Obama, who in an interview with CBS says his wife would leave him if she accepted a possible job offer.
Biden still refuses to initiate a formal transition from the Trump administration and does not receive part of the daily intelligence reports on US national security. In a speech Monday, Biden warned that the delays “will cost lives,” as the fight against the pandemic will also become more difficult.
