It’s been a tug-of-war between the United States and Sweden for Jens Cajuste, 21. The midfielder, who previously represented Sweden in the under-21 category, has been courted by the American Football Association and interest in joining the 21-year-old has been undeniably great.
But when Sweden’s national team captain Janne Andersson presented the national team for matches against Denmark, Croatia and France on Wednesday, Cajuste’s name was on the list.
– I got the message at the press conference. I was very happy and proud. It’s a dream come true for me, says Cajuste.

The midfielder, who has dual citizenship, admits that the process has been long and hard. The decision to represent Sweden was made recently.
– It was not an easy decision. I had to think about it, but in the end it was Sweden that felt good. I have a family and have lived in Sweden most of my life so it was the right decision. I made the decision a couple of days ago.

– I think Sweden has an exciting squad with very good players.
How was the process?
– It was hard and difficult. The United States has been in contact with me and with the coaches, we have had a very good dialogue and I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave me. It really wasn’t an easy decision.
Does my heart ache having to choose between two selections?
– It’s clear (it hurts). It has been difficult, so I have had to think about it a lot, but now I feel good with the decision I have made. I have had my family by my side and some friends.
– The family has said that I should choose what feels good, that no matter what I choose, they will support my decision and help me.
How was the contact with Janne Andersson?
– We had a dialogue a couple of days ago. I don’t want to talk about what we’ve talked about but I have a good feeling, a feeling of confidence. I got the impression that Sweden was watching me.
The development of football has been fast for Jens Cajuste. The midfielder left Örgryte in the summer of 2018 and last year he helped secure the Danish league title. This season, the 21-year-old has started every Champions League game.
– I had a process in which I developed my physique, mentality and strength. Since then, it has been step by step to where I am today. I have high demands on myself, that’s a factor. I’ve had that urge inside me since I was little, he explains.
How was the autumn of the Champions League?
– It was interesting and educational. It has been hard but very, very good for my development.
What has evolved the most?
– Above all, see the pace and how fast it goes, how little time you have to make a decision and it is important to be prepared. Every game has been a lot of fun to play and I have enjoyed it.
Cajuste continues:
– It has been a change for the whole team to go from the Danish league to the Champions League, but we have been taking steps for each game. We got off to a very tough start in the first match of the Champions League, but we have learned a lot, but we did a good performance in the second match. Most recently against Ajax, we were even better. Has risen.

What are your goals for the season?
– The objective is to score points in the Champions League, fight and win as many games as possible. However, winning the Danish league is our top priority.
Jens Cajuste constantly emphasizes the importance of living in the present, but also admits that sometimes it can be a lot at once.
However, the 21-year-old knows how to deal with all the situations he faces.
– I think I’m pretty calm there, but of course it’s a lot at the same time, but you just have to deal with it day by day and not think too much about it.
What do you do between all the Champions League matches and training sessions?
– Watching series, take it easy. Watch TV and movies. It is important to take it easy.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
– I have no idea but we’ll see. I dream of playing in one of the best leagues, of course.
Has there been interest in you from foreign teams?
– I’ve heard some things but I don’t focus on them.
Now Cajuste is looking forward to landing at Blågult and playing his first games with the Swedish national team shirt.
– I want to see what it is like, try and I think it will be very exciting and educational for me, he says and continues. It is a very exciting squad but with young and talented players. It will be a lot of fun to watch.
