On Monday, The New Yorker announced that it had shut down writer Jeffery Toobin, who is also one of the top legal analysts in the United States.

The reason: that he masturbated during a video meeting with an employee of the newspaper and the radio channel WNYC. This was the first to report from VICE.

During the meeting, which was trying to plan coverage of the upcoming presidential election, Toobin is said to have switched to another conversation during a discussion break. According to two anonymous sources who participated, the second conversation must have been “the equivalent of video calls to phone sex.”

At the same time, the meeting participants continued as if nothing was happening, according to a source. When Toobin returned to the meeting, he was unaware of what had just happened, according to the source.

I thought the camera was off

“I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake and thought I didn’t have the camera on. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and colleagues,” Toobin said in a statement Monday.

“I thought I had turned off the sound. I didn’t think anyone in the meeting could see or hear me, “he added.

A spokesman for The New Yorker, for whom Toobin has written for more than 25 years, said in a statement that “he was suspended while the case was investigated.”

During the videoconference, prominent New York profiles played the roles of various politicians. Jeffery Toobin represented the courts, writer Masha Gessen played President Trump.

“I’m pretty sure Toobin didn’t realize that people could see it,” she said in an interview. “I suspect he thought he was offline and that not everyone had returned to the conversation.”

Toobin, 60, is also an expert legal commentator for the news company CNN. The company said in a statement that Toobin, who has worked for CNN since 2002, “has applied for a license while handling a personal matter, which we have approved.”
