Lasse Diding, initiator and founder of the Jan Myrdal Society, tells Aftonbladet that the author died on Friday.
Jan Myrdal was taken to hospital on Wednesday with suspected blood poisoning and died on Friday morning.
– Jan has weakened in recent months so it was not entirely unexpected. I have met him regularly at the end and talked to him about his books and then he has told me about it intensively, but lately I was in awe. He could count and speak, but could no longer write, which meant he lost the spark of life, Lasse Diding tells Aftonbladet.
Jan Myrdal is the son of former politician S Alva Myrdal and national economist and politician S Gunnar Myrdal.
Jan Myrdal dead – 93 years
Throughout his successful career, Jan Myrdal has received several awards. In 1976 he received the Vilhelm Moberg Scholarship and nine years later the highest novel prize for the Promotion of Literature.
In 2002, he received the Ivar Lo-Johansson personal award and has also been awarded for his work on French literature.
– He was an extremely significant Swedish author. At the same time, he was a politically controversial figure that few have done in public, says Expressen Kultur employee Victor Malm.
“Complex and difficult figure”
In addition to his literary works, Jan Myrdal has been a controversial voice in the debate. Among other things, at Expressen Kultur he has denied allegations that he has made the Holocaust down.
Actor Sven Wollter remembers a “true, honest and important person.”
– He’s been a literary companion to me for as long as I can remember, since the 60’s. We were never friends, but we did see each other from time to time on shift, so to speak. He was responsible for something they tried not to compromise on, he says on Expressen TV.
Victor Malm believes that he was highly influential, but highly controversial.
– In a way few others have had in public. It has made him an outcast in a way. It is a complex and difficult figure, he says.
Jan Myrdal was previously married to Andrea Gaytán Myrdal, but divorced in 2018. Jan Myrdal has a son, Janken Myrdal, who he had with his ex-wife Nadja Wiking, and a daughter, Eva Myrdal, who he had with Maj Lidberg.
Jan Myrdal turned 93 years old.
