In 1999, police officers Olle Borén and Robert Karlström were shot dead in what became known as the Malexander murders.
Jackie Arklöv has admitted that he fired the last two shots at police and, along with Andreas Axelsson and Tony Olsson, was sentenced to life in prison.
After being rejected several times, Jackie Arklöv again requested a suspended sentence, after the request was granted to Axelsson and Olsson.
Jackie Arklöv is denied a fixed-term sentence
But the Örebro District Court rejects his request. Arklöv had requested a 35-year sentence, which would mean that he could be released on parole in late 2022 after serving two-thirds of the sentence.
The verdict establishes that Jackie Arklöv violated the internal rules of the institution on several occasions, which, however, was not of a serious nature. However, the district court states in the judgment:
“The district court determines that there is a concrete and significant risk that Jackie Arklöv will commit a crime of a serious nature, so there are no conditions to convert the life sentence to a sentence.”.
“Increasing propensity for violence”
The district court notes, among other things, the assessment by the National Board of Forensic Medicine that there is a “medium” risk that he will commit new crimes.
“Jackie Arklöv’s story of recurring and increasing tendencies to violence, her personality syndrome, impaired empathy and her easily becoming aggressive when consuming alcohol.“Chief Prosecutor Sarah Hajslund Hansen has written about Arklöv in connection with the assessment.
Jackie Arklöv’s life in prison
Like Tony Olsson, Jackie Arklöv, 46, claims to have found God within the walls. He has also actively participated in monastic activities.
On several occasions he has been denied when he applied for a fixed-term sentence. There he has spoken of a “moment 22”: the lack of a license prevented him from getting a change of sentence, but he could only get these licenses if he already had a fixed-term sentence, he considered.
Malexandermorden
• The police killings in Malexander are one of the most notorious cases in Swedish criminal history.
• On May 28, 1999, Jackie Arklöv, Tony Olsson and Andreas Axelsson robbed the Östgöta Enskilda bank in Kisa. They then fled south towards Vimmerby and just west of Kisa, in the town of Malexander. This is where police officers Olov Borén, 42, and Robert Karlström, 30, were shot dead.
• Arklöv, Olsson and Axelsson were all sentenced to life imprisonment.
Tony Olsson received his sentence set in 2019; that’s how it sounded then.
