It was in October that Ma criticized increasing scrutiny of his Internet empire by the Chinese state and that it would hamper innovation in the financial sector.

Jack Mas’s company Ant Group is one of the largest companies in the world and is behind China’s largest digital payment platform, Alipay, which has more than 1 billion users.

After the speech, Jack Ma completely disappeared from the public eye. An Alibaba spokesperson later stated that Ma was unable to participate due to a “scheduling conflict.”

Since then, speculation about the billionaire’s absence has continued to grow.

Appeared again

But on Wednesday he reappeared. This time at an annual event to pay tribute to teachers in rural China. In a video circulating on the Internet, Ma spoke about how he will spend more time on philanthropy in the future. However, it did not address its recent dispute with the Chinese state and its restrictions on Chinese tech companies.

– Recently, my colleagues and I have studied and thought. We have decided to dedicate ourselves to educational philanthropy. Working hard for rural renewal and common prosperity is the responsibility of our generation of entrepreneurs, according to Bloomberg.

– We will meet again when the pandemic ends, says Jack Ma in the video according to CNN.

The video also shows him visiting an elementary school in Hangzhou city in early January.

Alibaba’s shares in Hong Kong rose 6 percent after the video was released.
