A fifth of the elderly in Ivo’s review of caring for the elderly during the pandemic have not received an individual medical evaluation.
All regions of Sweden have failed to care for the elderly.
– It’s about people. Someone’s mother, someone’s father, someone’s loved ones, says Ivo CEO Sofia Wallström.
The proportion of physical medical evaluations of suspected coronary heart disease in nursing homes has been “very low.” One-fifth have not received evaluation from an individual physician, the vast majority have been evaluated by telephone, and in some cases, treatment has been decided after the physician has received information about a patient as a third party.
Thus, the accommodation staff has informed the accommodation nurse, who in turn has informed the attending physician about the patient’s condition. After that, the doctor has made a decision.
Ivo, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, which has carried out a comprehensive medical examination, is now criticizing all regions of the country. All regions have received “decisions” from Ivo regarding one or more deficiencies regarding the care of the elderly during the pandemic.
The deficiencies described are at the system level.
– The minimum level is too low, even during a pandemic, says Sofia Wallström during a press conference.
– Everyone has a job to do.

Sofia Wallström, CEO of Ivo.
At the press conference, he affirms that it is not acceptable.
– All those who need to receive good care and attention. Even in times of crisis. Our review shows that there are far too many people in nursing homes across the country who have not received an individual medical evaluation. We also see that decisions and implementation of end-of-life care have not been made in accordance with current regulations for older people living in special housing, says Sofia Wallström, General Director of IVO.
Ivo’s supervision has landed on four decision points that describe deficiencies in the care of the elderly:
-
Older people living in special housing have not received care and treatment based on individual needs in case of suspected or established covid-19.
-
Older people living in special housing and their relatives have not received information or been involved in care and treatment in the event of suspected or established covid-19.
-
The decisions and implementation of end-of-life care were not made in accordance with the regulations in force during the covid-19 pandemic for the elderly living in special housing.
-
It is not possible to follow the care and treatment of the elderly living in special dwellings who have had a suspected or established infection with covid-19 due to. deficiencies in primary care patient records.
– There are serious deficiencies that arise in supervision. The regions are those that have the general responsibility according to the Health Law. While we understand the ordeal of care during a pandemic, we see that the minimum level in the general way in which regions assume their medical responsibility is too low, says Sofia Wallström in a press release.
Regions, municipalities and care providers will receive an oversight decision from Ivo and will be asked to respond to show how deficiencies should be remedied.
– Care should be safe for all who need it, says Sofia Wallström.
