“It’s fabulous, it rarely happens”

The female swan’s story spanned enormously almost exactly a year ago.

The female Swan hatched eight eggs when local hunters shot and killed their mate. According to the city of Malmö, the murder was due to the man having carried out repeated aggressive attacks against pleasure boats on the canal.

Abandoned and abandoned to its fate, the swan had no chance against all the dangers lurking in the reeds. Very quickly she was chased by another pair of swans. Soon after, crows, trout, and other animals ate all eight eggs.

– Throughout the winter she was seen around her old nest and here on the canal. But she was always alone, says Bodil Nilsson, who has followed the swan for several years.

After a summer, fall, and winter on their own, the Swan Duck managed to find a new mate. In April, Kvällsposten reported that the newly formed Swan couple built a new nest near the raft near Paulibron in Malmö. There, the female calmly laid seven small eggs.

The male is ringed

Saturday was time to hatch.

– It’s fabulous. It rarely happens and you can stand so close and watch it, says Bodil Nilsson, as he follows the female of the swan and the little cubs from a few stable yards.

When Kvällsposten visits the Swan couple, the ringed man is a bit out of the way and patrolling.

Under the mother’s thick wings are two newborn swans. Until now, they are not the same shade of snow white as their mother. They are slightly grayer and very small.

“But they become as white as their mother when they grow up,” says Bodil Nilsson.

How can you know that this is the same woman who was left alone last year?

– This is because the male is marked with the number X8777. He is the same male that I caught at Roskildedammen in Pildammarna last year when he was sick.

– I know that he has not had another partner and it is always the female who decides where to reproduce. This female has known about the canal area for several years. That is why she has chosen to be here, says Bodil Nilsson.

All in all, the swan has laid seven eggs. It remains to be seen if everyone is born and survives.

“I will start swimming on Sunday”

– But the chances are good. There can probably be seven young children, says Bodil Nilsson.

The raft itself, where the female of the swan has built her nest, is blocked by the city of Malmö. Several bright red buoys can be seen around the raft, which should keep the recreational boats at a safe distance from the pair of swans and their young.

– This new male also chases boats, as the last one did. But he is not that aggressive at all. He is a perfect man who simply settles into an S formation and follows the ships, says Bodil Nilsson, who will continue to visit the Swan couple and keep watch:

– I think that on Sunday he will start swimming with his children.

Did you know last year that women would have a good chance to find a new partner and restart a small new life?

– yes It is just a myth that swans always live in the same couple. If a partner dies, they generally get a new partner.

“Sit quietly on the boat”

– Swans can be quite cheeky. For example, if a woman feels that the man cannot defend her, it is very possible that she changes partners with someone better, says Bodil Nilsson.

Chances are that flaners, canoeists, and anyone else moving around Paulibron will soon see two large white swans with a small herd of gray cubs behind them.

– If you move in the water near the swans, it is best to sit quietly in the boat, says Bodil Nilsson.

– The rooster started circling a shovel earlier and then the shovel started hitting the shovel with the shovel. So you definitely shouldn’t do that. It is better to take it easy.

Last year when I wrote about the Swan couple, many were angry at the city of Malmö. But now they have blocked the raft and placed buoys?

– Yes, but I work and collaborate with the city of Malmö and it has worked very well. Everything seems to go down well here.
