GOTHENBURG. Between 1983 and 1989, Roland Nilsson celebrated great triumphs as a player at IFK Gothenburg.
Now he is back as head coach.
– It’s a dream job for me, Nilsson tells Fotbollskanalen.

IFK Gothenburg called a press conference on Friday and introduced Roland Nilsson as the new head coach. Roland Nilsson played for the club between 1983 and 1989 and later won three golds in the Swedish Championship and one gold in the UEFA Cup.

– Kamratgården is a fantastic place, especially when you are in a period where the club is doing very well and the results are fantastic. Then there will be very special memories, says Nilsson.

He sees the job as head coach at IFK Gothenburg as a dream job.

– Yes, you can say it’s a dream job for me. There are very fond memories of the time you were here as a player. It is a great club in every way and the club has fantastic fan support, says Nilsson.

When did you first come into contact with IFK Gothenburg?
– It was after the match with the U21 team. It went really fast, you have to say it.

Do you feel sad leaving the role of league captain?
– If it does. I had a lot of fun and had a very good relationship with Håkan Sjöstrand and Lasse Eriksson, who have been my managers and with all the employees I have had to work with. It was not an easy decision. There were many tradeoffs.

What made the choice fall on IFK Gothenburg?
– Club football attracted me to be able to stand out with the players and work with them on a daily basis.

How do you see entering the middle of a season?
– The optimal thing is to have a preseason and start working on things for a longer time, but now it is not. Now is the time to jump right into what’s to come. It’s a game already on Sunday. You will be working a lot with Ferran Sibila and the other leaders in the future and you will get a bigger picture of how they have approached things before, says Nilsson.

On Sunday Falkenbergs FF waits outside IFK Gothenburg, which has gone 14 straight games without a win at the Allsvenskan.

– I’ll try to put the pieces in place. I will talk to the players and make them understand that the things that we must do we must do together. Then we will do it on the football field, says Nilsson, who thinks he has good control of the squad.

How would you describe your football philosophy?
– The philosophy is to have a strong defense, which means that you will also have a good offensive game. They use a fast passing game where you quickly traverse surfaces to create scoring opportunities, Nilsson says.

Yesterday saw the 0-4 loss against Hammarby.

– You didn’t put the pieces together correctly. Then it became very lonely. That is what we have to fix, so that the equipment is compact everywhere, he says.

What exactly do you have to screw up to make the team work better as a whole?
– Now I must speak to Ferran first and listen to what they had agreed. So we have to make sure we activate the necessary buttons for Sunday’s game, says Roland Nilsson.
