Niklas Rubin has kept a clean sheet in three of the games he has played so far.
But despite the fact that he beat Brynäs last week, it was Johan Mattsson who unexpectedly gained confidence when Frölunda took on Skellefteå on Monday night.
But then the 28-year-old would show that he is deeply involved in the match, when he played big in the 3-2 win.
– It is fun. I’m glad I can save the discs at the end that give us the extra points. It gives both me and the team a boost, he says.
The first period was dominated by Frölunda in terms of play, when Patrik Carlsson also put the disc ahead for the home team.
Frölunda won after a penalty shootout
In the second, Johan Sundström would extend the lead to 2-0.
But then Skellefteå and not least Joakim Lindström woke up.
Skellefteå’s big star managed to both reduce and equalize, leading the game to extra time and then to penalties. There, Mattsson returned to nail in total, while Lucas Raymond handled his penalty. Which gave Frölunda the fourth consecutive victory at home.
– They have a lot of dangerous shots and throw a lot of pucks towards the goal. It goes into sharp mode quite often, so it’s fun to be able to do it, says Mattsson.
“I want to show that I am good”
In the extension, Skellefteå’s giant talent, Philip Broberg, obtained an excellent position to decide the match. But despite the fact that Mattsson apparently seemed over the top, he managed to get a leg guard and save the puck.
– It came with speed in one direction and I in the other. You could quickly find out where he was going to go. It was just to push your leg and stretch as far as you could, says Mattsson of the giant rescue
How much did watching Niklas Rubin play big during the intro affect you?
– It is clear that it has. I want to show that I am good and that I deserve to play. It’s a competition! We will make it difficult for Roger (Rönnberg) and “Kribba” (Kristoffer Martin) to get the team out.
Frölunda’s next game is on Thursday when they face the Växjö Lakers at home.
