Irina Slavina set herself on fire and took her own life in protest

On Friday afternoon, Irina Slavina, 47, went to the police headquarters in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, where she set her clothes on fire. The journalist died on the spot from her injuries, writes Meduza independent.

Irina Slavina was the editor-in-chief of the local news site Koza.Press, which she founded after being fired from various newspapers. Several friends and colleagues tell Meduza that Slavina was unafraid and that her criticisms led to pressure from the authorities and the courts.

The day before the suicide, the police searched his home and confiscated all the phones and computers in the apartment. The reason was that he was a witness in a lawsuit linked to an opposition organization.

– This happened to him regularly. She always wrote about it, journalist Anastasia Setjina tells Meduza.

In the last two years alone, Irina Slavina had been fined four times, including for participating in demonstrations and for posts about the coronavirus.
