Iran’s death toll could be three times higher

Iran on Sunday reported the highest number of confirmed deaths from covid-19 since the pandemic began. According to the country’s Health Ministry, 434 people have died in the last 24 hours.

But the numbers are being questioned by the head of Iran’s Medical Council, Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, who told the semi-state news agency ISNA that the country has now achieved “a catastrophic increase in the death toll” in covid-19.

– Official death rates are based on registered patients only. Through field studies in hospitals and cemeteries, our council has received figures showing death rates at least three times higher than the official bill, Zafarghandi told ISNA, writes the Reuters news agency.

The Medical Council of Iran is an independent organization that issues IDs to doctors in Iran.

In mid-October, the director of Tehran’s China Hospital, Muhammad Talibur, warned that the disease could kill nearly 300,000 Iranians in 18 months if countermeasures are not followed.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said Sunday that the death toll is likely to rise dramatically:

– Due to the large number of hospitalized with covid-19, both in regular care and in intensive care, we will unfortunately see a high mortality rate in the coming weeks. To put an end to this, we must see an increase in the national collection so that everyone follows the directives that exist so that we can stop the spread of the infection, says Dr. Simasadat Lari to ISNA.

5,244 patients are treated intensive care units and their condition is described as “critical”.

Today, the official death toll is 35,298.

To date, Iranian authorities have reported 620,491 cases of corona infection and today the number of new infections is twice as high per day as when the pandemic began this spring. Many of the cases have turned out to be serious and of the 7,719 that have been confirmed in the past 24 hours, up to 2,389 have been hospitalized, writes the private Tasnim news agency.

The development of the infection in Iran has showed three peaks in the death toll and the country’s authorities are talking about a third wave. The third peak, now continuing to rise, is twice as high as the previous peak.

Iran has 84 million inhabitants.
