Diplomat Assadolah Assad is suspected of being involved in plans to carry out a bomb attack at a meeting held by an Iranian opposition organization in the French capital, Paris, in 2018.
Belgian prosecutors have raised formal suspicions against Assadi, a diplomat stationed in Vienna, for bombing the NCRI group, with links to the partially armed Iranian resistance movement The People’s Mujahedin. Representatives from the United States, Europe and several Arab countries were present at the Paris meeting on June 30.
Tehran has accused opposition groups of planting the suspects.
In an interrogation in mid-March, which Reuters was able to read, the diplomat said the trial is being closely monitored by groups in Iran and neighboring countries. He then said that the Belgian authorities did not understand what could happen if the verdict went against him.
The diplomat’s lawyer says that there has been no threat and that it is a misunderstanding.
Belgian prosecutors say that when similar threats are made in court proceedings, security measures are taken.
The case has been the subject of intense diplomatic and judicial activity. Five other people were arrested in July in connection with the criminal investigation.
