Zarif even claimed that Israel was preparing strikes against American targets in hopes of provoking American strikes against Iran before the American leadership changed in just over two weeks.
In fact, it appears that the United States and Israel have jointly planned their latest moves in the region. Both Israel and the United States have sent submarines to the Persian Gulf and the United States has sent strategic bombers to the region: they were refueled in the air over Tel Aviv. Israelis living next to the northern Ramat David air base, east of Haifa, note that there are more planes in the air at the same time, to react more quickly if something happens.

In all the countries of the region, air defenses and air forces are on alert. Several factors have contributed to improving mood. On December 23, Donald Trump said that Iran would be badly affected if a single American soldier was injured in connection with the memorial services for Soleimani’s death. Iran has shown that it does not need such reminders. Iranian-led Shiite militias in Iraq have been strictly instructed not to approach the embassy or US bases.
The stakes are high for Iran. If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is concerned about a power shift in America, Iranians have high hopes that Joe Biden will deliver on his promise to re-unite the United States in the great powers nuclear deal with Iran, that Trump withdrew in 2018.
Netanyahu and Trump are surely discussing the situation during ongoing conversations, about which nothing has been leaked. But their interests now differ on several points. While Trump would like to end Biden’s Middle East policy, Netanyahu must be more careful. That he too would like to cross Biden’s plans is a given, but at the same time he must make sure he doesn’t ruin his relationships with the new president at the door.
Iran proves almost daily that it can act far from home without giving either Israel or the United States an excuse to retaliate. On Wednesday there was one of the most spectacular attacks in recent years, against the Aden airport in Yemen. Northwest Yemen is ruled by the Houthi rebels. This week, the country’s Saudi loyalist camp established its own government, based in the southern port city of Aden. By the time the government flew in from Saudi Arabia, the airport was caught by surprise by a powerful attack, which included drones and long-range missiles. 25 people died and hundreds were injured in the attack. Among the enemies of Saudi Arabia, only Iran has the ability to inflict such destruction, with such precision.
As in previous attacks on Saudi targets, the projectiles were fired from Houthi-controlled territory. However, the Huthi do not make their own decisions regarding such attacks. Saudi Arabia is Iran’s favorite target, its leadership has shown that Saudi Arabia does not respond to even the most blatant Iranian attacks. The Saudi leadership, more zealously than Netanyahu, is urging the United States not to approach Iran. But some observers say the renewed US-Iran relations are, on the contrary, Saudi Arabia’s best life insurance policy: If the US lifts sanctions against Iran, the ayatollahs will certainly lose something in terrorist acts against their allies .
