Human trials have been launched in Iran using a covid-19 vaccine developed in the country, state media report.

If the vaccine proves effective, there is the capacity to start producing 12 million doses per month in six months, says the Setad business conglomerate, which is controlled by Iran’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Among the first volunteers to test the vaccine are senior representatives from Setad.

The Iranian regime accuses the United States of using its sanctions to prevent the country from buying vaccines from abroad. Food and medicine are exempt from sanctions, but banks have been deterred from financing deals with Iran.

However, Tehran declared last week that it had received approval from the US authorities to purchase the corona vaccine through the World Health Organization’s Covax project.
