Ingvar Kamprad was born in 1926 in the building called Cruz Blanca. It was a private school in childcare, whose students were often young pregnant women from elsewhere.
Because the school had the competition to have children, many former Älmhult residents were born here, according to the Småland museum. The business closed in the 1940s.
In January 2016, Ingvar Kamprad donated SEK 5 million to the municipality of Älmhult to help the elderly in the municipality. The money could only be used to establish a meeting place at the White Cross.
No renewal
It was also the attitude of the municipality to create “a place where the elderly of the municipality can request community, knowledge and information.”
But almost five years later, the situation has changed. Nothing has been renovated, the White Cross has been maintained and has deteriorated. And now it may be too late to save the house.
– We have not received any interest from a private actor who wants to participate in the renovation of the building, says opposition councilor Eva Ballovarre, S, to Smålänningen.
– It also costs almost 30 million SEK to renew the White Cross. We want to demolish the building to build something better.
Want to build a house
That Ingvar Kamprad began life in the building, and that he donated millions to preserve and use the White Cross, plays a minor role in this context.
– It had been a long time since the idea of preserving it had arisen, says Eva Ballovarre.
– There is an ambition for housing to be built in the area. A new detailed plan is ready and now this one with appeals is ready.
The Älmhult municipal board will then make a decision in the White Cross case.
