In late summer, tensions in the eastern Mediterranean have increased and many have warned of a war between Greece and Turkey.

The conflict between the two countries, both members of the Western NATO Alliance, has to do with the control of water areas in the eastern Mediterranean.

In various places The Greek and Turkish claims overlap, and it is precisely in these disputed waters that Turkish research vessels have been searching for gas and oil over the summer.

The rhetoric has been irreconcilable on both sides. Despite German mediation, direct talks between Ankara and Athens have not been possible. Both countries have sent warships to the area, and at one point a Greek ship and a Turkish ship collided.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has said that countries are “heading towards the abyss.” Several observers have warned that a simple mistake on the part of someone could trigger acts of war.

Now the Germans claim the Die Welt newspaper that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a couple of weeks ago deliberately tried to stage such a “mistake”.

According to Turkish military sources quoted by the newspaper, Erdogan allegedly asked his generals to provoke a military incident by sinking a Greek warship, but without causing any casualties. According to Die Welt, Erdogan would use the incident “to survive politically.”

But the generals said no. The same must have applied to a proposal to shoot down a Greek fighter plane.

Although the data So far, which they have not been able to confirm, they show how tense the situation has become. New escalations occur almost daily, in word and deed.

Turkey recently extended the exploration voyage of the Oruc Reis research vessel in disputed waters further, now until September 12, despite warnings from the EU. At the same time, Erdogan accused the union of “colonialism”:

– Even if hostile countries agree, they cannot stop us. It is ridiculous to try to use Greece, a country that couldn’t get out of a paper bag, as bait against a regional and global power like Turkey.

At the same time, Greece is preparing in your defense. On Tuesday, there were reports that the country was purchasing 18 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France.

“We are in talks with France and other countries to increase our defense capabilities,” a government official told Reuters.
