More than 600 people were arrested during Sunday’s protests in Belarus, the Interior Ministry said.
“A total of 633 people were arrested in the republic for violating the laws governing demonstrations,” a spokesperson wrote in the statement, adding that 363 of them were detained pending court hearings.
There are also unconfirmed reports that prominent opposition activist Maria Kolesnikova has been abducted by unknown persons. A witness told the Belarusian news site tut.by that they saw her being taken away in a minibus.
Minsk police say they are investigating allegations that Kolesnikova was abducted, Russia’s state-run Ria news agency reports.
More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Minsk on Sunday to demand the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko. It was the fourth consecutive weekend that people protested against the authoritarian leader.
The protests broke out after the August 9 presidential elections, which the opposition and much of the outside world condemned as rigged.
