According to a new report from the EU infection control unit, ECDC, a second wave of covid-19 has reached Europe, reports Swedish radio Ekot.
The situation has also worsened in Sweden.
Last week, there was a 70% increase in the number of corona drops in the country compared to the previous week, which is one of the highest increases in the country so far during the pandemic. There are a total of 115,785 diagnosed cases of the virus in the country and 5,918 people have died.
And the Västra Götaland region is no exception.
– Unfortunately, we have more patients to wait. We cannot answer how many and how high the peak will be, says Ann Söderström, director of health and medical care in the Västra Götaland region.
Double the number of new cases found
On Tuesday, nearly twice as many new cases, 1,371, were found in the region compared to the previous week.
According to Monday’s figures, 64 patients are being treated for covid-19 in hospitals in the Västra Götaland region and seven of them were in intensive care, this is the highest number since July.
According to the infection control in the Västra Götaland region, the increase occurs mainly in Gothenburg and the surrounding municipalities.
– It is very worrying that it is increasing. We were expecting to have a second wave and we had made a forecast, but it came much later than we thought. We hoped to avoid it, but we didn’t, says Johan Fält (M), chairman of the health care committee in Gothenburg.
17 more patients – in 48 hours
Johan Fält feels that people have gotten tired of keeping up with restrictions as well as during the summer.
– There are many young people who are partying and it is worrying. Young people are not usually as affected, but they carry the infection with their elderly loved ones, says Johan Fält.
Per Albertsson is responsible for coordinating the pandemic group in Sahlgrenska. Today, 48 patients in Sahlgrenska receive care with covid-19.
– Only on Sunday we had 31 patients, so it has increased by 17 patients in just 48 hours. That is a lot and should not continue. We really don’t dare call it a second wave, but there is much to suggest that, says Per Albertsson and continues:
– It will get worse, so it is difficult to say exactly in what time period, but it will increase in the coming weeks. It is important that people think and do their best to adhere to the rules that apply now.
Large burden for healthcare
According to Albertsson, it is the 50 to 70 age group that is increasing the most. At the same time, he is now concerned that the health service, which has been struggling since last spring, may not be able to cope with the burden.
– We already have a heavy burden in terms of medical care and have also fallen behind in other care that we would have to catch up with. It will be difficult to do both and take care of covid patients, says Albertsson.
In Skåne and Uppsala, more stringent local restrictions have been introduced, how far away is the Västra Götaland region in a similar scenario?
– It’s an infection control issue. But it may very well come. If we don’t stop this, it will be necessary.
