Several Swedish regions have received severe restrictions to deal with the growing spread of Covid-19. On Thursday, Kronoberg County and Sörmland were added to the list.
The first to come out with local restrictions was Uppsala. In Thursday’s “Aktuellt” at SVT, Fredrik Sund, operations manager of the infection clinic in Uppsala, spoke about the situation in the city. And it was clear that it looked bad.
– It is a very difficult challenge, and something that we all struggle with throughout Sweden. That’s why I think this situation is much more serious than last spring, Sund said in “Aktuellt.”
“We are in free fall”
He noted that this spring so-called “planned care” to deal with the pandemic was postponed. Now that debt of care must be paid as the infection increases.
When asked what Sund thinks should be done, he was also clear: the restrictions must be much stricter.
– We have seen these weeks that the restrictions are not met. With such a spread of the infection happening and happening … it is rather the case that we and the rest of Sweden are almost in free fall. So I think we need to come up with stronger recommendations and restrictions. Now I think it is time to close the partnership here and there in Sweden.
Doctor: Ineffective soon
Host Bodil Appelqvist asked if he was referring to curfew. The infection doctor replied:
– There is a lot to discuss and it can be different in different parts of Sweden. But I think we have to go in with stricter restrictions, because now we have seen that it is too ineffective.
– So seriously it may be necessary.
In recent weeks, the number of infected people has increased in Uppsala, at the same time that restrictions have been introduced. And soon it will be too late to sharpen them, thinks Fredrik Sund:
– Now you have the opportunity, in a few weeks or months I think it will be ineffective, because then I think we have a greater diffusion, he said in “Aktuellt” and clarified that what he says is a “personal opinion based on health care.”
