So far this autumn, the spread of covid-19 has been low in Västra Götaland. At the same time, this has meant that infection control has been able to track the infection more actively and identify where the so-called crown buds are.
Places with congestion are clear areas of risk. Leif Dotevall, an assistant infection control physician, also sees something he describes as “a big problem.”
– Some sick people come here who have been on vacation or have been visiting countries of origin.

Increase in air travel
On March 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a recommendation against unnecessary travel to all countries. Starting in July, the Foreign Ministry subsequently withdrew advice for one country after another in Europe. This has meant that travel has increased.
Infection control receives, through the Swedish Public Health Agency, information about a confirmed infected person who has been flown seven days before the illness. People who sat on the closest lines are then contacted, as part of monitoring the infection.
This is how infection control worked around the so-called import cases that were discovered before the pandemic took off, and this is what the work looks like now again, when the overall spread of the infection in Sweden is less.
– People who have been abroad are really a risk. This is the message we really want to emphasize: Avoid traveling abroad if possible.

The situation in Europe has changed
The risk of traveling abroad had not previously been viewed as particularly great, given that Sweden also has a social spread of COVID-19. However, the situation has changed, says Leif Dotevall. Several European countries have a rapidly increasing spread of the infection.
– I think this is a moving target. You could probably say that this summer, but if you look at the curve for the European Anti-Communications Authority now, the number of confirmed cases per day is double in Europe than it was in March-April. Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Balkans have many cases. This means that we also have to reconsider this with travel all the time: is it necessary?
The Swedish Public Health Agency so far has mainly called for personal responsibility and keeping informed about the situation when traveling abroad.
