India eases restrictions, despite growing infection trend

After the United States and Brazil, with 5.9 and 3.8 million cases, respectively, India is the country where the majority of people infected with covid-19 have been found, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

On Saturday, more than 76,000 new cases were reported, meaning that soon 3.5 million Indians have tested positive for the virus.

Earlier this week, more than 85,000 people were found to be infected in one day, the highest number since the start of the pandemic. Although Saturday’s figures are lower, the infection trend points to the upside in the country and for almost two weeks India has reported more cases a day than the United States and Brazil, according to Reuters.

The relief is part of the government’s attempt to revive the economy.

There were 1,021 corona-related deaths in the country on Saturday. A total of 62,550 people with the virus have died, according to figures from the country’s Ministry of Health. The death toll is rising in Maharashtra, India’s most populous city, Mumbai.
