The island of Erik Hamrén had in his hands the ticket for the European Championship.
But in just a few minutes, in the final stage of the match, Hungary was unlikely to change from 0-1 to 2-1.
– It’s a big disappointment. “We were just minutes away from the European Championship,” Erik Hamrén tells Stod2Sport.
As captain of the Swedish national team, Erik Hamrén participated in two European Championships. For a long time it seemed that he could pack for a new championship.
Everything seemed clear, but Hungary turned 0-1 with minutes to go. The match ended 2-1. A nightmare in a few minutes for Iceland.
– It’s totally, totally dark. I don’t even think you can make the brain think of the plan after the second goal, says Hasse Backe in the C More study.
Because it was so close, so close to Iceland.
I dream to start after a mistake
The team had led 1-0 at the start of the match through Gylfi Sigurdsson. He launched a direct free kick into the hands of Peter Gulácsi, Emil Forsberg’s teammate in Leipzig. The goalkeeper had the gloves on the ball, but dropped it.
– It’s unforgivable. You get it straight, you don’t even have to move, says Kim Källström, a CMore expert commentator who actually saw the invitation.
After the shock, Hungary slowly made its way into the party. Iceland had a couple of chances in the first half, but in the second half Hungary led the game against a defensive Iceland.
Turned into the final minutes
There was equal opportunity, but Iceland held its ground. The team also had the opportunity to puncture the game, but burned that position. Instead, it was two home heroes who ran the show. Loïc Négo tied in match 88 when Iceland failed to clear the ball and in injury time Dominik Szoboszlai decided, with a beautiful shot.
-I’m really happy. I don’t understand what I’ve done, I just did “my thing.” But I’m happy with the goal, he says in the post-match TV interview and explains:
– When we scored the goal against us after ten minutes, we did not lower our heads. We work hard for each other.
“Big disappointment”
Erik Hamrén was very disappointed after the cruel defeat.
– It’s a big disappointment. We were just minutes away from the European Championship. We didn’t work like I wanted us to and they had a lot of the ball in the second half. But that’s how it is when a team really wants to score. We didn’t have the energy or the power to win the game. I have to think if I could have done something different, says Erik Hamrén according to Stod2Sport.
For Hungary, the place in the European Championship means much more, as the country is the organizer of the European Championship at the Puskas Ferenc Stadium in Budapest.
However, the team will end up in the “Group of Death” where France, Portugal and Germany meet. The finals of the European Championship will be decided in the summer of 2021.
