When Sweden defeated Hungary 8-0 in the European Championship qualifiers last week, Iceland responded 9-0 against Latvia.
But when the teams met, there was no parade of goals.
It was until the 33rd minute before Sweden found the right and unsurprisingly it was Anna Anvegård who scored, scoring three goals against Hungary, when she scored her seventh goal for the national team.
Sofia Jakobsson, invisible on the right wing, had a bit of luck on the ball. The recording ended with Anvegård sucking the ball and landing a shot that snuck behind Sigurdardóttir.
– I lowered it and cut it, it was good. We created a lot of situations in the first half and we could have scored two goals, Anvegård tells SVT.
Before that, Sweden had a chance to make it 1-0 when Nathalie Björn received the ball for free but the shot went straight to Sandra Sigurdardóttir.
Sweden kept lying, Lina Hurtig had a different shot that went straight into the arms of Sigurdardóttir.
It was mainly on the left wing that Sweden was able to advance thanks to the pair Jonna Andersson and Lina Hurtig.
Federation captain Peter Gerhardsson made only one change compared to the team that beat Hungary 8-0.
Goalkeeper Jennifer Falk, daily at Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC, kept a clean sheet on Thursday, but did not regain confidence when Gerhardsson decided to let FC Rosengård’s Zecira Musovic make his debut in the big arena.
– We believe that it is a match that suits Zecira well and that is why we bet on her, says Gerhardsson to SVT before the match.
But it was an unfortunate intervention by Musovic after an Icelandic corner kick that created a stir at the end of the first half.
Musovic lost an aerial duel with Perla Viggósdóttir and the ball ended up in the net.
The Icelandic players cheered for the draw but referee Ivana Martincic found a free kick in the mess in front of the goal, which allowed the Blue and Whites to breathe a sigh of relief and go into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The Icelandic draw came after a serious misjudgment by Lina Hurtig following a throw-in by Jane Jónsdóttir. The ball ended up in the hands of Elín Metta Jensen, who could easily find Zecira Musovic’s back.
– They have invested a lot in fixed situations and are in a good head, says Musovic.
Lina Hurtig became a scapegoat after the 1-1 goal error.
– Now it’s bitter, I lost the ball, that’s what happened. I would just clear myself and fail, says a depressed Hurtig after the game.
Before the game, Amanda Ilestedt spoke about “Icelandic brutality”. Now Sweden played so hard and on a couple of occasions it was not far that Ivana Martincic stuck her pipe in her mouth and took a penalty.
Sweden was really rejected at the end and two hits to the ribs saved Peter Gerhardsson’s troops from defeat.
– The feeling is that it is a lot of struggle, we knew that before. There will be a bad rhythm in our game and it will be a slightly uncontrolled passing game, says Gerhardsson.
Everything indicates that the team that wins the return leg in Gothenburg on October 27 will take home the group victory and a direct place in the final of the European Championship in England 2022.
– You can be happy with the points, but the performance could have been done better, says Gerhardsson.
