The search for the ten missing, including a 13-year-old girl, has continued overnight until Friday. At 0530, the police chief of tasks, Karianne Knudsen, tells Dagbladet that they have nothing new to say.

– We realize that it will be people who have died, but rescue personnel believe that we can still find someone alive. And that is what we hope, says Karianne Knudsen to TT.

The devastation is great. From the previously ordered area where villas and apartment buildings stood in a row, it is just a mess of mud and ruins in the 700-meter-long, 300-meter-wide crater that has caused the landslide. According to the police, some houses were moved up to 400 meters when the landslide occurred at 04:00 on Wednesday.

The risk of new breeds remains of large dimensions, which complicates the search and rescue work that is mostly allowed to be carried out from the air, among other things with the help of helicopters equipped with headlights and drones with thermal cameras.

Not being able to work on the ground in the landslide area is frustrating for the rescue team, Norwegian People’s Aid Operational Leader Harald Wisløff tells NRK.

– Being here waiting without being able to get off and saving lives is very frustrating and stressful for the crew.

According to Harald Wisløff, it is possible survive several days in landslides even in the prevailing cold and snow conditions.

– Our experts know that you can survive many, many days in a building if you have access to air. So there is no reason to scale down, but it is an ongoing rescue effort, he tells NRK.

On Thursday, another 46 people were evacuated from 14 houses north of the landslide area due to cracks in the ground. According to the Norwegian Water and Energy Authority (NVE), there is still a great risk of new landslides.

So far, 1,000 people have been evacuated and more may be needed. Ten people are injured, one of them seriously.
