Police received an alarm about the incident on Saturday morning, reports the Finnish Yle.
The man was in the company of four other people. The group was cycling along a terrain route in the Urho Kekkonen National Park in Savukoski in Finnish Lapland when they were shot.
The hunter was hunting birds alone. The police have now launched a preliminary investigation into the cause of another person’s death.
– Based on current information, there is no reason to believe that the hunter intentionally shot the cyclist, says the leader of the investigation, Marko Ijäs.
Locals can hunt in the area and the hunter must have had the necessary permits.
It is around 300,000 registered hunters in Finland.
Tobias Forsstedt of Raseborg Police says hunting-related personal injuries are unusual.
– Minor injuries can happen from time to time, but fatal accidents don’t even happen annually, he says.
Forsstedt believes that ultimate responsibility always rests with the hunter, regardless of whether he hunts alone or in a hunting team, even if the police are responsible for monitoring and controlling the hunt. It can be difficult for the police to control hunting because the hunters go deep into the woods.
– Everyone who carries a weapon and fires a shot has a responsibility and must ensure that the bottom is clear and that a shot can be fired safely.
