The first cases were noticed this weekend in the city of Eluru, when the hospitals filled with people who fell ill quickly. On Monday, a total of more than 450 people were hospitalized. A 45-year-old man suffered a heart attack and died after suffering epileptic seizures. By Monday night, 200 people had been discharged, Indian media reported.

Authorities first suspected some form of food or water poisoning, but have since found no evidence of this in testing.

Andhra Pradesh is one of the Indian states most affected by COVID-19, with more than 800,000 cases. However, there is no connection between this weekend’s disease outbreak and covid-19, all of whom were hospitalized tested negative for the coronavirus. On the other hand, the new disease poses a great challenge for already pressed care.

A large group of experts is heading to Eluru, a city with a quarter of a million inhabitants, for further research. However, it is estimated that the spread of the disease occurred within a relatively limited circle in Eluru.
