Another catastrophe has occurred in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya. Twenty migrants have lost their lives in an attempt to reach Italy.

Thus, almost 100 lives have been claimed in two different boat accidents on the same day.

The UN migration agency, IOM, reported Thursday that at least 74 migrants lost their lives when a ship with 120 people on board sank in the Mediterranean outside the city of al-Khums, east of the capital. from Libya, Tripoli.

But according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), another accident also took place on the same day outside the city of Surman, west of Tripoli. There, 20 migrants drowned and only three women could be rescued alive from the sea.

“Rescued by local fishermen, they were shocked and terrified. They saw their loved ones disappear in the waves, die as they watched,” MSF wrote on Twitter.

According to the IOM, at least ten boats with migrants on board have sunk since the beginning of October.

On Tuesday and Wednesday alone, two other accidents claimed at least 19 lives, according to the IOM. In this way, more than 900 lives have been extinguished during the attempts to reach European shores so far this year.

Libya, more or less lawless, has become a base for human traffickers and a springboard for people seeking a better future in Europe.
