How the Trump family decorated the White House for Christmas

The largest spruce was brought to the White House last week. The Christmas tree arrived in a beautiful car and Melania Trump met it outside the White House. This is exactly what will happen when the Christmas season begins.

The conifers arrive a few days before Thanksgiving, late November. But there is also an entire team in the White House that is just busy planning and implementing everything so that the President’s House becomes a resplendent palace that can be displayed to the American people.

And this is where the first lady has one of her most important tasks. Already during the summer, you have different alternatives to decide and you can even leave your own mark on how it should look. But the large floor-to-ceiling spruces cannot be changed, nor can the smaller spruces (rarely less than ten feet) found both indoors and outdoors. In the private part of the White House, the presidential couple can do whatever they want, but in the official rooms, it is style and history with flowers, fir sprigs and holly that will dominate the picture.

When Melania Trump spoke with her close friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff about the first lady’s work with Christmas decorations, she revealed what she felt:

– Who currently cares about Christmas things and decorations? But I have to do it anyway, right?

Unfortunately, the (now ex) friend secretly recorded the result and published it in a revealing book about Melania during the election campaign. So now it only remains for Melania to pretend that she is nothing and alive and eager, she surrenders to her when she smiles and shows what the White House looks like in Christmas decorations. Because you hardly want to stand out negatively in the historical books where former first ladies, outwardly at least, have shown their delight in what historically seasoned florists, decorators, and experts have accomplished.

There is usually a patriotic theme in one of the rooms. Blue, red and white American flags. So too when Melania gets involved and chooses. Holly garlands, fir and cypress twig garlands on fireplaces. Rosettes and amaryllis, Christmas roses and moss. Each fir has its own special decorations.

For those who want to create their own White House fir tree, it is possible to purchase the official Christmas ornament created each year by the White House Historical Association and reminiscent of a special president. This year, it is John F Kennedy who has his head bowed slightly and his arms crossed. It’s unusual to have a portrait of a president, but this year the choice fell on Kennedy, whose wife Jacqueline set the standard for how the Christmas tree should be dressed in a family with children. It became a “children’s Christmas tree” with Jesus in the manger, the pagans, Joseph and Mary, and the three wise men of life in one of the rooms. with Lady Bird, Lyndon Johnson’s wife, the crystal chandeliers were covered in cloth. Rosalynn Carter, like her husband Jimmy, toned down and spread a cautious Christmas cheer punctuated by the economic crisis. With Ronald and Nancy Reagan, influenced by Hollywood, it was the other way around. Here were giant spruces with artificial snow and icicles and a sleigh patted on the old wooden floor. Michelle Obama involved her husband Barack in the decisions about what it would look like: very green and beautifully lit also in the park around the White House.

But now it is Melania Trump who, for the last time, can be and show off with the White House decorated for Christmas. Lots of gold and glitter, exactly what the president appreciates too.
