The spread of the infection is increasing and the number of covidual patients in need of intensive care or care in Sweden is increasing. The big university hospitals are prepared for more pressure.

At the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, 18 additional intensive care places are being prepared in addition to the 43 already available. In practice, the department has been ready for months.

– We have seen this as a contingency. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to use it, says intensive care manager Björn Persson.

When the situation was at its worst, the Stockholm Region had 230 covid patients admitted to the intensive care unit (IVA). Today there are about 15 patients.

Right now, the Örebro region has the highest number cases per capita in Sweden, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency. The region is planning a possible new wave of covid patients. In VAT, there are around 30 places and the usual care places for covid-19 are about 40, which if necessary can almost be doubled.

– We are constantly working to increase preparedness. It is important to decide when to change gears, so that it does not happen too late. There we have a good collaboration with the infection control unit, says Eva Slätmo, area manager responsible for the places of care in the Örebro county region.

The challenge of opening up more places of attention are to get enough staff. Name several of the regions.

– Staff can be redeployed and work overtime. Many of them would be needed if the situation worsens. Many are tired. There is a strong call for the public to take responsibility, says Slätmo.

The Uppsala region has been hit hard by the recent spread of the infection. At Akademiska sjukhuset, capacity has been increased; there are currently 1.5 care rooms reserved for covid patients.

– I think we will see a greater number of patients in the future. We change gradually and it can happen in a few days, says Johan Lugnegård, chief physician at the University Hospital.

Nine patients were treated intensively on Thursday in the region, which currently has double the capacity.

– If it burns, we can allocate even more resources. This is done at the expense of other activities, which is a big challenge, says Lugnegård.

The Västra Götaland region has just now ten covid squares are ready in the intensive care units of the different hospitals. But they are ready to scale quickly should the number of patients increase.

– If we have more than ten patients, we prepare for 24 places. We had nine patients this morning, but during the afternoon we managed to print, so now we have seven, says Peter Dahm, Iva’s resource and operations manager for the pandemic task force at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

In the Skåne region, they are currently in the first step of their escalation plan with ten intensive care units ready for covid patients.

– Yesterday, 32 patients with confirmed covid were treated in care centers and 4 received intensive care at Skåne University Hospital. In the next step of our escalation plan, we will increase to 120 places of care and 20 places of intensive care, wrote Deputy Director of Administration Katarina Johnsson and Chief Nursing Officer David Sparv in an email.
