With the agreement, the emirate becomes the first Gulf state and the third Arab country to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel.
Under the US-brokered agreement reached in early August, Israel is committed to halting the planned annexation of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said plans are still on the table.
The Israeli airline El Al will make its first flight to the United Arab Emirates. On board were, among others, Kushner and Robert O’Brien, the US national security adviser, as well as her Israeli counterpart Meir Ben-Shabbat.
Saudi Arabia allowed the plane to fly through its airspace, something for which Kushner was especially grateful.
A common factor for the United Arab Emirates, Israel, the United States and Saudi Arabia is that they see Iran as the main threat.
In Abu Dhabi, delegations will discuss trade, transport, health, energy and security issues.
– Our goal is to reach a joint action plan to develop relationships in a very broad field of areas, says Ben-Shabbat.
Palestinian leaders have described the agreement as a betrayal of the United Arab Emirates.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said talks are underway to reach similar agreements with other Muslim Arab countries. According to various sources, Bahrain, Oman and Sudan may be next.
– While this is a historic flight, we hope you embark on an even more historic journey in the Middle East and beyond, says Kushner.
